Sunrise Lights Up Switzerland: The Dawn of 5G Standalone Revolution

Switzerland is on the cusp of a mobile revolution as Sunrise, the country’s leading mobile operator, prepares to deploy 5G Standalone (5G SA) across its entire network. This ambitious move positions Sunrise as the first carrier in Switzerland to adopt this cutting-edge technology, marking a significant leap forward in mobile connectivity.

What is 5G Standalone?

Unlike the current 5G non-standalone (5G NSA) networks, which rely on existing 4G infrastructure, 5G SA operates independently using a dedicated 5G core network. This setup allows for enhanced performance, reduced latency, and the ability to deploy network slices—dedicated segments of the network tailored for specific applications.

Benefits of 5G SA

  • Improved Performance: 5G SA offers faster data speeds and lower latency, enhancing overall user experience.
  • Network Slicing: This feature enables the creation of customized network slices for various industries, such as broadcasting, emergency services, and logistics, ensuring optimized performance for each use case.
  • Edge Computing: By supporting advanced Edge computing, 5G SA facilitates real-time data processing closer to the user, further reducing latency and improving responsiveness.
  • Indoor Coverage and Voice Quality: Sunrise promises better indoor connections and more stable voice calls, along with more efficient battery use for smartphones.

Sunrise’s Vision

Sunrise has been at the forefront of 5G technology since its launch in April 2019. According to Elmar Grasser, CTO of Sunrise, “5G standalone is the foundation that will allow us to develop 5G offerings that enable new communication & entertainment experiences, and new business solutions.” This strategic move is expected to drive digitization across both business and society, positioning Sunrise as a leader in Switzerland’s digital transformation.

While the service is not yet live for customers, Sunrise plans to make 5G SA available throughout the year. This rollout will not only enhance mobile connectivity but also pave the way for innovative applications and services that leverage the full potential of 5G technology.

As Switzerland embarks on this journey with Sunrise, the country is poised to experience a new era of mobile connectivity that promises to revolutionize how people live, work, and interact.
